For foreigners understanding the seasons can make a big difference. It can help you choose the right beach. It can save you money on accommodation. It can also help you avoid arriving somewhere during heavy rain.
Thailand have three main seasons: cool season, hot season and rainy season.
Here is what foreigners should know before planning their next trip to Thailand.
December to February: The Cool Season
For many people, this is the best time to explore Thailand. Temperatures are generally more comfortable. Rain is less common in many parts of the country. This makes it a popular period for travel.
Bangkok can still feel warm during the day. Northern cities such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai can become surprisingly cool at night.
The beaches are also a major attraction during this period. Phuket and Krabi usually see plenty of visitors. The islands on Thailand’s Andaman coast are popular for clear water and sunny days.
The downside is simple. Prices can be higher and popular destinations can be busy. If you are planning a trip during December or January, booking hotels and flights early can be a good idea.
March to May: The Hot Season
Thailand starts getting seriously hot from March.
April is usually the month when you really notice it. Temperatures can become uncomfortable during the afternoon. Bangkok can feel especially hot because of the humidity and traffic. But there is one huge reason to visit in April.
Songkran.
Thailand’s famous water festival takes place around 13-15 April. Cities across the country come alive with celebrations. Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Pattaya are among the best-known places to experience it. For foreigners living in Thailand, Songkran is also a great chance to experience something that goes far beyond the usual tourist attractions.
If you do not enjoy extreme heat, however, this may not be the best time for long outdoor trips.
June to October: The Rainy Season
The rainy season gets a bad reputation. Thailand can get heavy rain. But that does not mean it rains all day every day.
In many areas, rain comes in short and heavy bursts. You can have a sunny morning followed by a huge downpour in the afternoon. There are also some advantages. This can be a great time to explore places such as national parks, mountains and smaller towns.
The important thing is to check the weather for the specific region you plan to visit. Thailand is a large country. The weather can be very different between the north, central Thailand and the islands.
What About Thailand’s Islands?
This is where things can get confusing for foreigners. Thailand’s islands do not all have the same weather pattern. The Andaman coast includes places such as Phuket and Krabi. The Gulf of Thailand includes Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
Their rainy periods can be different. That means you may still find good beach weather somewhere in Thailand when another part of the country is experiencing heavy rain.
Don’t automatically cancel a beach trip because it is rainy season in Thailand. Check the weather for the exact island first.
When Is The Best Time To Visit Thailand?
There is no single answer. If you want cooler weather and plenty of sunshine, December to February is usually the safest choice.If you want to experience Songkran and do not mind the heat, April can be unforgettable.If you want cheaper accommodation and fewer tourists, the rainy season can be worth considering.
And if you already live in Thailand, you have an even bigger advantage. You do not have to see the country in one trip. You can plan weekend trips around the weather. When one region is getting rain, another part of Thailand may have beautiful conditions.
