Thai officials have launched an urgent investigation after reports emerged that several foreigners may have obtained Thai citizenship and Thai ID cards on Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.
The allegations have sparked widespread attention because they also involve claims that a foreign national may own multiple plots of land on the popular tourist islands.
Surat Thani Governor Jumphot Wannachatsiri has ordered authorities to examine the reports and verify whether any irregularities took place. Officials say they have not yet found evidence that citizenship applications were processed through provincial channels. However the investigation is continuing.
According to local reports the issue involves foreigners connected to businesses in the tourism and education sectors. Authorities are also reviewing claims regarding Thai identification numbers that allegedly begin with “81033”.

A source within Thailand’s Land Department reportedly found that one Israeli national who had obtained Thai citizenship may own five land plots. Four of the plots are reportedly located on Koh Phangan while another is on Koh Samui. Officials have not confirmed whether any laws were broken.
