Every July, the northeastern city transforms into one of the country’s most breathtaking cultural destinations during the famous Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival.
What makes this event so special is that these are not ordinary candles. Local artisans spend months creating gigantic wax masterpieces. Some stand several metres tall and feature intricate carvings of Buddhist stories, mythical creatures, and scenes from Thai culture.
The tradition dates back more than 125 years. It began in 1901 when local authorities decided to replace the Rocket Festival with a more peaceful Buddhist celebration. Over time, simple candle offerings evolved into elaborate works of art that now attract visitors from around the world.
The highlight of the festival is the grand parade. Massive candle floats move through the streets accompanied by dancers in traditional costumes, musicians, and colourful cultural performances. The atmosphere is festive and surprisingly lively. It feels more like a cultural carnival than a religious event.
For foreign visitors, the festival offers a chance to experience a side of Thailand that many tourists never see. While Bangkok and the islands often steal the spotlight, Ubon showcases authentic local traditions, warm Isaan hospitality, and some of the country’s finest craftsmanship.

By Bus: Long-distance buses from Bangkok take approximately 10-14 hours, depending on traffic conditions and the type of service.
