In the mountains of Loei province lies a completely different side of the country – one that many foreign visitors have never experienced. Phu Kradueng National Park is one of Thailand’s most legendary travel destinations.
You have to hike nearly 9 kilometres to reach the top. By the time you arrive your legs are probably questioning your life choices. But the moment you see the cool mountain air, the pine forests and the endless views across the cliffs, you understand why so many Thais become obsessed with this place.
The park sits on a massive flat-topped sandstone mountain, creating a huge plateau high above the surrounding countryside. Covering more than 348 square kilometres, the landscape feels surprisingly different from the tropical Thailand that most foreigners know.
Make sure pack up a jacket because the air can be chilly, especially during the cold season.
One of the highlights is watching the sunrise from famous viewpoints such as Pha Nok Aen where a sea of mist often blankets the valleys below. In the evening you can watch the sun disappear behind the mountains.
Phu Kradueng is also an important conservation area. Established as Thailand’s second national park in 1959, it has since been recognised as an ASEAN Heritage Park.
