A group of young tourists has found themselves at the centre of a social media storm in Thailand after a loud argument on Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain went viral.
It all started when a Thai woman asked the group to lower their voices. Talking on the BTS isn’t against the rules, but most locals keep conversations quiet. Speaking loudly on the train is often seen as inconsiderate, especially during busy hours.
The tourists looked surprised by the request and the situation quickly became tense. As the woman began filming them on her phone, one tourist tried to block the camera. Then another fired back with a comment that made things even worse.
“Sorry for bringing money into your country.”
That single sentence instantly became the biggest talking point online.
After the clip spread across TikTok, the group explained that they had been trying to work out where to get off because their tour guide hadn’t given them clear directions. The Thai passenger pointed them towards the Sukhumvit Line and again asked them to keep the noise down.
The disagreement ended when the train reached the next station, but online it was only getting started.
Thousands of Thai social media users backed the woman. Most said the issue had nothing to do with foreigners speaking English or enjoying their holiday. It was simply about respecting the people around them in a shared public space.
Many were also angered by the “bringing money” remark. Commenters argued that being a tourist doesn’t give anyone a free pass to ignore local etiquette. Spending money in a country doesn’t mean its customs no longer apply.
